Acanthurus japonicus
Powder Brown Surgeonfish ( Tang)

Maximum Length: 8.3 in.

Range: Western Pacific.

Minimum Aquarium size: 75 gal.

Food & feeding: Varied diet, Hebivores that eat vegetable matter like deied and frozen foods that contain marine algae and blue-green alga Spirulina supplement with pieces of zucchini, broccoli, and leaf lettuce ypur greener type lettuce and sushi nori (dried seaweed) feed 3 times a day.

Aquarium suitability: Fair.

Reef Aqurium compatibility: generally safe, like most tangs will swim around feeding on microalgae and small fleshy macroalgae. if sources are low they may nip at large polyped stony corals.

Captive care: best to get these fish at your LPS so you can watch it's behavior, they do not ship well. they are hard to acclimate and are very delicate. should be acclimated to a well macro established tank. they like places to hide if feel threatened. the less stress on them the better chance of non Ich out break. and they can be a picky eater. Keep only one per tank, and do not mix with more-aggressive acanthurids.

Blue Tang

Scientific Name: Paracanthurus hepatus

Max. Size In Aquarium: Up to 1'

Color Form: Black, Bright Blue, Bright Yellow

Care Level: Medium

Temperament: Peaceful

Reef Compatible: Yes

Diet: Herbivore

The Pacific Blue Tang is also referred to as the Palette Surgeonfish, Hepatus Tang, Blue Surgeonfish, and Regal Tang.

Pacific Blue Tang requires a 70 gallon or larger aquarium with a number of hiding places and plenty of room to swim. It is more susceptible to lateral line disease, fin erosion, ich and other skin parasites than many other fish. Thus Making it a more difficult fish to keep.

Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health. Another good supplement to add to there diet is garlic soaked food, this will aid in getting rid if ick and other health problems.

The Yellow Hawaiian Tang, also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang, or Yellow Surgeonfish, has an oval bright yellow body.

A 50 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. It is aggressive towards its own species, or Tangs in general, and it is best to keep only one per tank. If more than one tang is to be kept, introduce simultaneously.

PURPLE TANG

Purple Tang

Zebrasoma xanthurum

Max Length: 9.8 in. (25 cm)

Range: Red Sea

Minimum Aquarium Size: 100 Gal. (379 L).

Food & Feeding: Mostly a vegetable diet, dried marine algae, brown varieties. Spirulina, herbivore rations, and some frozen meaty foods for planktivores. You may supplement slices of zucchini, broccoli, leaf lettuce. It is recommended to feed 3 times a day.

Aquarium Suitability: Hardy

Reef and Aquarium Compatibility: Excellent, grazes on filamentous microalgae, and fleshy macroalgae. Is generally safe with most inverts. If underfed some individuals nip at large-polyped corals and even some soft corals.

Captive care: The Purple Tang at one time was very difficult to obtain and was very high in price. Now they are relatively easy to get and have become more favorably priced. The purple tang is one of the more aggressive members of the genus and will fight with members of its own species and other tangs. The purple tang needs to be feed a proper herbivorous diet to keep it from developing head and lateral line erosion.

Kole Tang

Goldring Bristletooth (Yelloweye Bristletooth, Yelloweye Surgeonfish, Kole's Tang)

Ctenochaetus strigosus

Max Length: 7.1 in. (18 cm)

Range: Indo-Pacific.

Minimum Aquarium Size: 75 Gal. (284 L).

Food & Feeding: Mostly a vegetable diet, dried marine algae, blue green algae.

Captive care: The Kole's Tang is a beautiful fish with a gold ring around the eye. Indian Ocean species bear spots and the Pacific specimens show distinct stripes. Juveniles of both forms are a bright yellow that gradually fad to a less-flamboyant brown. This fish is not aggressive and will not bother tankmates, with the possible exception of close relatives. This fish will more than likely be picked on by the more-aggressive surgeonfishes. Does best in a tank with microalgae to satisfy its grazing habits.

Name: Naso Tang

Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons

Care Level: Moderate

Max. Size In Aquarium: Up to 1' 6"

Color Form: Bright Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Gray, Red
Temperament: Peaceful

Reef Compatible: Yes

Diet: Herbivore

The Naso Tang, also known as the Orangespine Unicornfish, darkens with maturity. Naso Tangs from Hawaii are often more brightly colored than those found in other areas. As a juvenile, the Naso Tang from Hawaii is dark gray with a blue stripe following along the dorsal fin and an orange stripe in the anal fin. When matured, the body takes on a reddish-brown tone and the juvenile striping is supplemented with additional color. The tail takes on a lyre shape with a yellow vertical bar towards the back. Two orange patches appear at the peduncle spines near the tail. The face undergoes the largest change. A thin, black mask forms between the eyes and mouth. The mask is outlined with bright yellow and the lips develop a reddish-orange color.

A 125 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room, and places to hide, with a tight-fitting lid provided to prevent jumping to escape. It is aggressive towards other tangs, but peaceful with other fish in the tank.

A very nice addition to any aquarium.
